We've been discussing Ancient Egypt in our home this week, mummies included. The effort the Egyptians went to preserve royal dead guys was phenomenal (like an elaborate game of Operation, only you don't put the insides into a tray, but into canopic jars, except the heart which you wrap and then put back into the body, for good old Osiris to weigh and measure). I thought it would be fun to do some sort of mummy project. So, after some searching, I found this clever idea and decided it was worth a shot, and it didn't disappoint! And it's far less complicated than actual mummification (tee hee!). Here are some of the pictures:
I am sure there is a better way to wrap the top and bottom so that the print doesn't show through and you don't use a whole ton of fabric, but it's got me stumped. I thought about painting the boxes, but I was too excited (read lazy) to wait for paint to dry.
Just wrap and wrap to you hearts content, gluing periodically. At one point, I was like, "Gee, why is my finger hurting?" and realized that I was hot gluing myself. I did it several times, actually. I don't suggest you do it.
Then, after you are done wrapping your wheat thin box, oh, excuse me, mummy, just tuck in the ends and glue.
I was only going to make three of these little guys, but then I had all this leftover fabric, so I scavenged through my pantry, and found this:
Isn't it cute? Hee hee...With the rest of the fabric, I made two more little guys.

What you need:
Two yards of white broadcloth, torn in different sized strips (you can cut the fabric, but it's faster to just tear it, and it give a nice frayed look)
Assorted googly eyes
Empty boxes
Hot glue gun and sticks
Approximate time: 1 hour
Kid Friendly Rating: Not really for younger kiddies, I was sad to discover. But if you have older kids who are skilled in glue gunnery, then have at it!
